For Charity Through Scares
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — Every Halloween, Donald Totty transforms his Kempsville yard into a terrifying haunted experience. In recent years, he's used it to raise thousands for a local nonprofit.
Totty's "House of Torment" features an eye-catching front yard display, but the real attraction is the twisted trek visitors take through his backyard — featuring actors in costumes, chainsaws, dismembered limbs and plenty of jumpscares.(Sabella, 2025, p. New3Everydayhero)

Meet The Man Behind The Torment
This began 30-plus years ago. As a Navy brat, I spent time at the teen center on the naval base, run by an enlisted man passionate about Halloween. He created a haunted house in a warehouse nearby, and my friends and I volunteered there for many years. I was hooked from the start. As an adult, I built backyard haunts each Halloween that grew every year. This passion drives me to improve annually, and now it's a neighborhood favorite that brings me joy. We now support a local non-profit for foster kids in the Tidewater area. Join us this Halloween—bring friends and family to enjoy the thrills and support a great cause. Make our tradition yours and experience Halloween like never before!
